I've logged miles across this country on roads that range from forgettable to life-changing. And when people ask me where to ride in Ohio - without hesitation, I point them southeast.

To Athens. To the Appalachian foothills. To Ohio's Windy 9.

If you haven't heard of it, the Windy 9 is a network of nine motorcycle routes that all begin and end in Athens, Ohio. Together they cover roughly 830 miles of some of the best riding in the Midwest - river towns, forest canopies, ridge tops, technical twisties, and long peaceful cruising roads that make you forget what day it is.

I've ridden all nine. Some of them more times than I can count. And in this post I'm going to give you the honest, rider-to-rider breakdown that tourism websites never do - so you can stop researching and start planning.

Want the full route-by-route breakdown in one place?
I put together a free guide - Ohio's Windy 9: A Rider's Guide - that profiles every route with distances, difficulty ratings, honest takes, local food stops, and my personal favorites. Download it free here.

Why Southeast Ohio?

Most people don't picture Ohio when they think of great motorcycle roads. That's a mistake - and honestly, it's one that works in our favor. The roads out here are uncrowded, well-maintained, and genuinely beautiful in a way that surprises first-timers.

The southeastern corner of the state sits in the Appalachian foothills. That means elevation changes, ridge lines, river valleys, and the kind of winding terrain that makes motorcycling feel like it was invented specifically for this landscape. You'll ride through Wayne National Forest, Hocking Hills State Park, and along the banks of two of Ohio's most scenic rivers.

Athens is the perfect base camp. It's a college town with Ohio University at its center, which means good food, plenty of lodging options across every price range, and the kind of energy that makes a town feel alive even on a Sunday night after a long day in the saddle.

The Nine Routes: What to Expect

Here's the honest overview. Every one of these is worth riding - but they're not all the same, and knowing the difference helps you build the right trip.

Route 1 - Rim of the World (86.6 miles)

The name earns itself. Route 78 carries you along ridge lines with views that genuinely don't look like Ohio. Wayne National Forest rolls out on both sides, and the Stockport Mill - a working grist mill on the Muskingum River dating to the 1800s - is one of those stops where you end up staying longer than planned. At under 87 miles, this is a great warm-up route or an easy morning ride before something more demanding.

Route 2 - The Southern Dip (92.8 miles)

This one heads south toward the Ohio River and follows its banks through river towns that feel frozen in time. The road is accessible - long sweepers, light traffic, manageable curves - making it a solid choice for newer riders or anyone who wants a beautiful day without the technical demands. At the southernmost point you can cross into Point Pleasant, West Virginia, home of the Mothman legend. Worth it just for the story.

Route 3 - Hocking Hills Nipper (92.3 miles)

If you've never ridden through the Hocking Hills, this route changes your mental image of Ohio permanently. Sandstone gorges, old-growth hemlocks, caves, and waterfalls - the Hocking Hills Scenic Byway winds through terrain that feels more like West Virginia than the Ohio most people know. Old Man's Cave and Ash Cave are worth a stop if you have the time. Even if you skip the hikes, the riding through this corridor is exceptional.

Route 4 - Lazy Rivers (101.1 miles) ⭐ Phil's Favorite

This is one of my two favorite routes on the Windy 9.

You follow the Hocking River south from Athens as it winds toward its confluence with the Ohio, then trace the Ohio east toward Pomeroy. The Hocking has a quiet, almost forgotten quality that I find deeply peaceful on two wheels - no rush, no noise, just water and road.

The Ohio River section is where the ride gets genuinely interesting. You'll pass multiple working locks and dams - massive engineering structures that lift and lower commercial barge traffic through the river system. Pull over and watch one operate if you get the chance. It's slow-motion and impressive in a way that's hard to describe until you've seen it.

Pomeroy is the natural stopping point, and it's worth lingering in. The town is built on a narrow strip of land between the river and a bluff - one of the more unusual layouts of any small Ohio town. When I'm in Pomeroy, I always eat at The Court Street Grill or Fox's Pizza Den. Both are exactly what you want after a long morning in the saddle - local, unpretentious, and genuinely good.

Route 5 - Zaleski Zipper (60.8 miles)

The shortest route on the Windy 9 - and possibly the most corners per mile. The road through Lake Hope State Park and Zaleski State Forest is tight and technical, with short punchy elevation changes that keep you working the whole time. This is a route where your technique shows. The Moonville Tunnel - an abandoned rail tunnel with its own ghost story - is a short gravel detour that's absolutely worth making. Because of its length, the Zaleski Zipper pairs well with Route 3 or Route 8 for a full-day combination run.

Route 6 - Pioneer Pass (103.5 miles)

Pioneer Pass covers the most varied terrain of any route on the Windy 9. You'll cross rolling ridge tops with farms and orchards at elevation, descend toward the historic river town of Marietta, and - for experienced riders - get a preview of State Route 555 before committing to the full Triple Nickel experience. Think of it as a trailer for Route 9.

Route 7 - Pomeroy Dash (63.3 miles)

Old US 33 south from Athens - the original highway before the modern four-lane bypassed it. The towns along this corridor have a worn, honest character that newer roads tend to erase. At 63 miles it works best as an add-on to a bigger day, and it converges with Routes 2 and 4 at several points, making it easy to stitch into a custom multi-route itinerary.

Route 8 - Black Diamond Run (103.5 miles)

Named for the coal that built this region. The Hocking Valley was Ohio's coal country, and the "Little Cities of Black Diamonds" - a collection of old mining towns including Corning, Shawnee, and Sunday Creek - still carry the weight of that history. Wayne National Forest fills in the stretches between towns with long, tree-lined road that keeps the riding interesting without being demanding. Nelsonville's Historic Square is a solid endpoint before the return to Athens.

Route 9 - The Triple Nickel (92 miles / 184 round trip) ⭐ Phil's Favorite

State Route 555. The Triple Nickel. My favorite road in Ohio.

There isn't a serious Ohio rider who doesn't know this road by reputation. And most of them have a story about the first time they rode it. The name says everything: triple digits, triple curves, triple the attention required.

This road does not forgive lazy lines or late braking. It winds through the Hocking Hills with relentless direction changes, tight decreasing-radius turns, and elevation drops that make you feel every foot of the terrain. You pass through small, quiet communities that feel untouched by time, and through stretches of Wayne National Forest where the canopy closes over the road and the whole world goes quiet.

I've ridden it more times than I can count. It still gets my full attention every single time. That's rare - most roads eventually become background. The Triple Nickel stays in the foreground.

The official Windy 9 route runs one-way at 92 miles. Most riders do it as an out-and-back - 184 miles round trip - because the road feels genuinely different in each direction. Do it both ways if you have the day.

One warning: this route is not for beginners. Read it before you ride it, know your limits, and stay present. If you're not sure whether you're ready, start with the Zaleski Zipper and work up.

How to Plan Your Windy 9 Trip

Use Athens as your base. All nine routes begin and end there, and the city has enough lodging, food, and nightlife to make a multi-day stay genuinely comfortable. Book in advance if you're coming during peak season (May–October) - Athens fills up faster than you'd expect.

Don't try to ride all nine in a weekend. It's tempting, but rushing through these roads defeats the purpose. Two or three routes per day - with stops - is a much better experience than grinding out miles to check boxes.

Combine shorter routes with longer ones. Routes 5, 7, and 1 are under 90 miles. Pairing any of them with a longer route like 4 or 8 gives you a full day without overwhelming either one.

Check road conditions before you go. The Triple Nickel especially can have gravel wash across the surface after heavy rain. The official Windy 9 website (windy9.com) has a road conditions section worth checking before any trip.

Get the official tank bag maps. The Athens County Visitors Bureau offers free paper maps and downloadable tank bag PDFs for each route. They're genuinely useful on the road, even if you run a GPS.

Get the Free Guide Before You Go

I put everything from this post - plus more detail on each route, difficulty ratings, local food stops, and tips for combining routes - into a single free PDF guide.

Ohio's Windy 9: A Rider's Guide is free to download and was written entirely from personal riding experience. No recycled internet advice, no tourism copy. Just honest intel from someone who's ridden every mile.

Want Someone to Handle the Planning For You?

If you'd rather show up and ride than spend hours researching roads, that's exactly what The Unbound Nomad is built for.

I offer two ways to take the stress out of planning:

Micro-Adventures - guided single-day rides on roads like these, starting at $150. You show up with a full tank and the right gear. I handle the rest.

Concierge Trip Planning - custom multi-day itineraries built around your goals, your pace, your skill level, and the kind of riding you love. Routes, stops, lodging guidance, GPX files - all designed by someone who's ridden the miles himself. Starting at $75.

No algorithms. No generic Google routes. Just real planning from a real rider.

👉 Plan your ride at unboundnomad.com

Ride well. Stay present. See you out there.

There's a moment, early in a long trip, when you realize you've actually done it. You've left. Home is behind you, everyone you know is behind you, the routine is behind you. The road ahead is the only thing that's real.

For me, this trip carried extra weight. After an accident last year, that shook my confidence and tested my commitment to riding, I needed to know - really know - that I was still a biker. This ride was my answer. 26 days, 6,000 miles, from Delaware, Ohio to Huntington Beach, California and back. The Legends Never Die Tour - the Route 66 leg - was the spine of the westbound journey, roughly 2,400 miles of American history, roadside kitsch, genuine beauty, and long meditative stretches of road that give you more time alone with your thoughts than you might want.

Here's what I found.

Illinois: Where the Mother Road Begins

Route 66 officially begins - or ends, depending on which direction you're traveling - at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Adams Street in Chicago. I didn't start there. I came from Ohio, but I rode into downtown Chicago to get a photo of the original start sign. Unfortunately, the location and circumstance didn't let me capture a good photo. But Lozen and I hit the official start of the route, and the adventure had begun!

Illinois gave me some of the trip's quieter pleasures. Ambler's Texaco Station in Atlanta - a beautifully preserved relic, the kind of place where you half expect a guy in coveralls to wander out and ask if you need a fill-up. The Shrine of Our Lady of the Highway, a small roadside memorial that carries the weight of those lost on the route. The Litchfield Museum, tucked away and easy to miss. These aren't the headline attractions. They're the things that make Route 66 worth riding slowly.

Missouri: History Gets Complicated

Missouri opened with the St. Louis Arch gleaming on the horizon across the river - one of those sights that earns the word "iconic" without any irony. I'd seen it before. It still gave me pause.

But Missouri's Route 66 corridor was where the road first showed me its complexity. Cuba, Missouri has turned its downtown into an outdoor mural gallery - vivid, full-scale paintings covering entire building facades, each one telling a piece of the town's or the road's history. I rode slowly through town, craning my neck at each one.

Then there was the Uranus Fudge Factory. I'll let the name speak for itself. Some things about Route 66 are not subtle.

The rain found me somewhere south of Doolittle and didn't let up until Springfield. I ate dinner in a diner with wet gear hanging off the back of my chair and felt completely content.

Oklahoma: Soul of the Road

If Illinois is where Route 66 starts and California is where it ends, Oklahoma is where it lives.

Gay Parita Filling Station outside Halltown is the first stop I'd put on any Route 66 itinerary. A meticulously restored 1930s station, staffed by volunteers who will talk to you for as long as you want to listen. The kind of place that makes you understand why people spend their lives preserving things like this.

Galena, Kansas - technically just over the state line - gave me the inspiration for the "Tow Mater" truck from the movie Cars sitting in a field. A crowd of tourists around a tow truck. Only on Route 66.

The Blue Whale of Catoosa might be the most surreal thing I've ever pulled up to on a motorcycle. A giant smiling whale rising out of a pond in somebody's backyard, painted blue, built by a man as an anniversary gift for his wife. America contains multitudes.

But it was the Oklahoma City National Memorial that stopped me. 168 chairs on a lawn, one for each person killed in the 1995 bombing. The smaller chairs for the children. You don't rush through a place like that. You stand there and you let it mean something.

Texas and New Mexico: The Sky Gets Bigger

The Texas Panhandle is exactly as flat as advertised, and Cadillac Ranch is exactly as strange as photographed - ten Cadillacs buried nose-first in a field, spray-painted by thousands of visitors over the decades until they're thick with layers of color. It shouldn't work as art. Somehow it does.

Crossing into New Mexico, something shifts. The sky gets bigger. The light changes. The roadside architecture takes on a different character - adobe walls, hand-lettered signs, trading posts that have been selling turquoise and blankets since before the highway existed.

Tucumcari at dusk is one of the great Route 66 experiences. The neon signs come on as the sun goes down, and for a few minutes the whole street looks like a postcard from 1957. I sat outside my hotel and just soaked in the moment.

Arizona: The Road Earns Its Reputation

Arizona is where Route 66 becomes the thing people write songs about.

The Petrified Forest National Park pulled me off the highway for hours. Ancient wood turned to crystal over millions of years, scattered across a painted desert landscape that looks like something from another planet. I had not planned to stop. I could not make myself leave.

Winslow, Arizona. "Standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona" - the Eagles lyric is literally painted on the corner where it happened. Tourists line up for photos. I lined up with them. No shame.

Seligman was where Route 66 fought back against the interstate system and won. When I-40 bypassed the town in the 1970s, it nearly killed Seligman overnight. A barber named Angel Delgadillo started organizing. He helped found the Route 66 Association of Arizona and sparked a preservation movement that saved the road from being forgotten entirely. Angel's Barbershop is still there. Angel himself was not in the day I passed through, but his legacy is everywhere.

Oatman is a mining ghost town in the Black Mountains where wild burros wander the main street and tourists feed them carrots. It is completely ridiculous and completely wonderful. The road to get there - a series of hairpin switchbacks up and over the mountains - is some of the best motorcycling I've ever done.

California: The End of the Road

Roy's Motel and Cafe in Amboy is one of those places that feels like the last outpost before the end of the world. A classic googie-architecture sign rising above the Mojave Desert, a cafe, a motel, and a whole lot of nothing in every direction. I nearly ran out of fuel getting there. The sign was worth it.

Then the desert gave way to suburbs, suburbs gave way to the Pacific Ocean, and Route 66 ran out of road at the Santa Monica Pier.

I rode to Huntington Beach instead - a personal choice, a place that meant something to me. I sat on the sand and looked at the Pacific and thought about the fact that I had ridden here from Ohio. That I had done this thing I said I was going to do.

What Route 66 Is

Route 66 is not a theme park. It's not a museum, and it's not a shortcut. At its best, it's a living record of the country that built it - the optimism, the tragedy, the kitsch, the genuine beauty, the people who refused to let it disappear.

Riding it end to end, slowly, stopping when something catches your eye, talking to the people who maintain these places and tell these stories - that's the only way to do it. You can drive it in a weekend if you push. You'd miss everything.

Take your time. The road will wait.

This ride was a 26-day motorcycle journey from Delaware, Ohio to Huntington Beach, California and back. This is Part 1 of a 6-part series.

I'm Riding Route 66 in Four Days.

I leave in four days.

Twenty-seven days on the road. 5,587 miles. Chicago to the Pacific, back through Death Valley, across the Colorado Rockies, and finally home to Ohio in late June.

I've been planning longer rides than this my whole riding life. But this one is different. This one has been circling in the back of my head for years, and the timing - this particular year, 2026 - is why it's finally happening.

The Year

Route 66 turns 100 this year.

The road was commissioned on November 11, 1926. A hundred years ago, it connected Chicago to Los Angeles across 2,400 miles of American landscape that most people had never seen and would never otherwise cross. It became the road that carried people west during the Dust Bowl. The road soldiers came home on. The road that motorcycle culture in this country grew up alongside.

Indian Motorcycle turns 125 this year.

Founded in 1901, Indian is the oldest American motorcycle manufacturer. Before there was a Route 66, Indian motorcycles were already being ridden across this country on roads that barely deserved the name. The machines that helped build the culture we ride in today.

When two anniversaries like that land in the same year, you notice.

The Ride

I'm joining the Legends Never Die Tour - an organized ride put together by the team at RidingFish in partnership with Bearded Bobber. We'll ride Route 66 from Chicago to Huntington Beach, California over 10 days, May 25 through June 3.

This isn't a rally. It's a moving tribute - a group of riders on a historic road during a historic year, doing what motorcycles have always done best: covering ground and paying attention.

The route hits the stops that matter. Troy and Springfield, IL. Broken Arrow and Elk City, OK. Tucumcari, NM - the neon capital of Route 66. Winslow, AZ. Kingman. And then the desert run into Southern California.

Huntington Beach is the finish line for the official tour. It won't be mine.

After the Tour

I'm not heading straight home from the Pacific.

After the LNDT ends, I'm turning north toward Death Valley - one of the most severe and beautiful landscapes in North America. Then east through Las Vegas, up to Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon country, and across to the Four Corners.

From there, I'll spend about eight days based out of Ignacio, Colorado, riding the roads around Durango and Silverton - including the Million Dollar Highway, which might be the most dramatic road in the United States. If you've never ridden US-550 through the San Juan Mountains, it's on a very short list of roads that will stay with you.

Then the long push home through Pueblo, Dodge City, Kansas City, and back to Ohio.

June 20th, if everything goes the way it's supposed to.

Why I'm Telling You This

Part of what I do - what I've always done - is ride roads so I can tell you honestly what they're like. Not tourism copy. Not a list of attractions you can find on any travel blog. The real read on a road: the surface, the traffic, the stops worth making, the ones that look good on paper and aren't.

This trip is the biggest single piece of that work I've ever done. Twenty-seven days across parts of this country I've ridden before and parts I haven't. I'll be posting the whole thing - honest, unfiltered, the kind of road notes that hopefully make your next trip better.

Follow along on Instagram at @unbound_nomad. That's where the daily updates will live - photos, short videos, and whatever thoughts I have at the end of a long day in the saddle.

The blog posts will come after. Longer pieces on the roads worth knowing about, the route planning behind a trip like this, and whatever the open road offers up that I didn't expect.

One More Thing

If you've ever thought about doing a trip like this - Route 66, the Southwest, the Rockies - but the planning feels overwhelming, that's exactly the kind of work I do for riders through Concierge Trip Planning. Custom routes, real recommendations, no algorithms. Built by someone who's ridden the miles himself.

More on that when I get back. Right now, I've got a bike to finish packing.

Ride well. Stay present. See you out there.

Some rides are simple.
Some rides are serious.

But every ride gets better when you roll out prepared.

The Rider Readiness System™ (2026 Touring Edition) is the digital toolkit I built after years of real miles, real lessons, and a hard reminder that preparation is not paranoia. It is freedom.

This is not fluff.
It is a system.

🧭 What This Is

The Rider Readiness System™ is a premium set of touring checklists and rider guides designed to help you:

Pack the right gear without overpacking

Reduce avoidable breakdowns and surprises

Prepare for weather, miles, and long days in the saddle

Build a repeatable process before every ride

Ride calmer, sharper, and more confident

Whether you're headed out for a day rip or a multi-state run, this system keeps you dialed.

🔥 Why It Matters

Most problems on the road are not "bad luck."
They are predictable.

A tire that should have been checked

A tool you assumed you had

Rain gear buried under everything else

A dead comms unit when you need it most

Fatigue stacking up quietly until it becomes dangerous

Prepared riders ride differently.
They ride farther.
They ride smarter.
They ride free.

📦 What You Get

When you download the Rider Readiness System™, you get a bundle:

Master Guide (Color Edition)

Master Guide (Black and White Print Edition)

Individual Single-Page Checklists (Color) for fast phone access and easy printing

You can use the full guide at home for planning, then keep the single-page checklists on your phone or in your tank bag.

🏍️ Who This Is For

This system is for you if:

You ride weekends and want to stop forgetting small things

You tour and want a consistent process for long-haul prep

You travel to rallies and want to pack efficiently

You are getting back into riding and want structure

You want to ride with confidence instead of crossed fingers

You do not need to be an iron-butt rider.
You just need to care about doing it right.

✅ How Riders Use It

Use it however you like, but this is the simplest flow:

Before the ride: Pre-Ride Safety Checklist

Packing: Choose the list that matches your trip length

Day-of: Weather + Conditions checklist

Always-on: Saddlebag Essentials stays packed

If something goes sideways: Emergency + Breakdown checklist

Simple. Repeatable. Reliable.

Some rides are about distance.
Some are about destinations.

This one is about legacy.

The Legends Never Die Tour is a cross-country ride along historic Route 66 - a road that helped define American freedom, motorcycle culture, and the idea that the journey matters just as much as the destination.

This isn’t a race.
It isn’t a rally circus.
And it sure as hell isn’t a cookie-cutter tour.

It’s a rolling tribute to the riders, machines, and stories that came before us - and a reminder that the road is still calling.

📍 The Ride at a Glance

Route: Historic Route 66

Dates: May 25 – June 3, 2026

Duration: 10 days

Spirit: Freedom, heritage, and miles earned the right way

From the Midwest to the Pacific, this ride follows one of the most iconic highways in the world - through small towns, wide open stretches, and places that still remember when motorcycles meant something a little different than they do today.

Why This Ride Matters

Route 66 isn’t just pavement - it’s a timeline.

It carried soldiers home.
It carried dreamers west.
It carried motorcycles before anyone was calling them “lifestyle brands.”

The Legends Never Die Tour exists to honor that history - not with speeches or slogans, but by riding the road the way it was meant to be ridden.

No shortcuts.
No rush.
Just miles, stories, and machines doing what they were built to do.

Who This Ride Is For

This ride is for you if:

You believe motorcycles are more than weekend toys

You care about the why, not just the where

You respect the road and the people who built the culture around it

You want to be part of something meaningful - not just another event

You don’t need to be a hardcore iron-butt rider.
You do need to show up with the right mindset.

Getting Involved

Details are still being finalized, but the dates are set.

If you’re interested in:
- Riding along for part or all of the journey
- Meeting up along the route
- Supporting or sponsoring the ride
- Following the story as it unfolds

This is the time to raise your hand.

👉 Reach out and start the conversation.

Because legends aren’t built by spectators -
they’re built by the ones who ride.

Final Word

Trends fade.
Roads crack.
Motorcycles come and go.

But some things don’t disappear -
they just keep moving forward.

Legends never die.
They ride on.

Blue Ridge Parkway Tour

On March 1, 1872, Yellowstone became the first national park for all to enjoy the unique hydrothermal and geologic features. Within Yellowstone's 2.2 million acres, visitors have unparalleled opportunities to observe wildlife in an intact ecosystem, explore geothermal areas that contain about half the world’s active geysers, and view geologic wonders like the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. The Unbound Nomad tailors custom vacation packages to the park based upon your desired lodging, and sightseeing selections and length of stay. These packages are all-inclusive and cover lodging, food, and any admissions required for the duration of your adventure. There are no predefined routes for this tour as it is one of the most customized packages offered.

The Beartooth Highway is an All-American Road in the western United States on a section of U.S. Route 212 in Montana and Wyoming between Red Lodge and the Northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park. Dubbed “the most beautiful roadway in America” by On the Road correspondent Charles Kuralt, the Beartooth Highway climbs to an astounding 10,947 feet above sea level. Since its completion in 1936, the Highway has awed millions of visitors with its astonishing views of one of the most rugged and wild areas in the lower 48 states.

As it winds its way between the northeastern entrance of Yellowstone National Park and Red Lodge, the Highway traverses an impressive range of ecosystems – from lush lodge pole pine forests to alpine tundra. At the highway’s summit, travelers find themselves in a sky-high world of glacial cirques, clear alpine lakes, and snow that lingers through the summer months. The brutal climate at this elevation deters the growth of trees and shrubs, and the plants that do grow here have adapted in remarkable ways. Some convert sunlight to heat, and many conserve water the way desert plants do. In late June and July, the fragile tundra blossoms in a lavish display of wildflowers – shooting stars, columbine, and Indian paintbrush, to name a few.

With 20 peaks over 12,000 feet in elevation (including Granite Peak, Montana’s highest at 12,799 feet), the Beartooth Mountains lie within the 943,377-acre Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Grizzly and black bears make their home here, as do elk, deer, moose, bighorn sheep, Rocky Mountain goats, mountain lions and bobcats. With over 950 alpine lakes and hundreds of miles of trails, these mountains offer ample opportunities for recreation – much of it accessible from the Beartooth Highway.

The Cherohala Skyway was completed in the fall of 1996 after planning and construction for some thirty-four years. It was North Carolina’s most expensive scenic highway carrying a price tag of $100,000,000. It winds up and over 5,400 foot mountains for 18 miles in North Carolina and descends another 23 miles into the deeply forested back country of Tennessee. The road crosses through the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests thus the name “Chero…hala”. The Skyway is becoming well known in motorcycling and sportscar circles for it’s long, sweeping corners, scenic views and cool summer breezes.

This road enthusiast’s dream connects Robbinsville, North Carolina with Tellico Plains, Tennessee. It can be desolate at night and extremely dangerous in the winter months. There are no facilities other than a couple of restrooms for the entire 41 miles so make sure you have enough gas to make the crossing. There is little evidence of civilization from views that rival or surpass any from the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Virginia's Skyline Drive is a National Scenic Byway that runs 105 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains starting in the north of the Shenandoah Valley at Front Royal to Waynesboro, where it meets the Blue Ridge Parkway. Skyline Drive is Shenandoah National Park’s linear conduit, with 75 overlooks connecting travelers to all the major visitor centers, campgrounds, lodges, picnic areas and most trailheads. Concrete posts numbered every mile keep you apprised of your whereabouts. The Drive is a worthy destination in its own right.

Fall is the most popular time to travel along Skyline Drive, with its colorful foliage from late September to mid-November. But spring offers the most colorful wildflowers along the drive, as well as blooming azaleas and mountain laurel.

The Northwest Passage Scenic Byway is Idaho’s longest byway. This route follows the route Lewis and Clark navigated through north-central Idaho. It begins at Lewiston, and arrives in Lolo Pass to the east. The traverse winds along the Clearwater River Canyon, parting toward the Camas Prairie on one side while continuing along the Middle Fork of the Clearwater River on the other.
This byway moves through a magnificent wilderness, including the Lochsa Wild and Scenic River, and ends at the Lolo Pass Visitor Center. Following the route along U.S. 12 parallels the history trails of Lewis and Clark and Nez Perce. Before departing, stop to visit Hells Gate State Park, a public recreation area and entrance to Hells Canyon, the deepest canyon in North America, on the southern edge of Lewiston. And be sure to stop to see the Tsceminicum sculpture, a bronze artwork that speaks of Nez Perce legend creatures, located where the Clearwater and Snake Rivers meet in Lewiston.
{: width=456 height=295 style="display: block; margin: 0 auto"}
You'll visit the Nez Perce National Historical Park Visitor Center, which honors the inland northwest home to the Nimiipuu (Nez Perce) people, in nearby Spalding. The park consists of 38 places that are significant to the history and culture of the Nimiipuu. Located in Orofino off Hwy 12 is Canoe Camp, the location where Lewis and Clark, with the help of the Nimiipuu, built five canoes that would deliver them to the Pacific Ocean. According to the Nez Perce creation story, a coyote killed a large monster along the Clearwater River near present-day Kamiah, which resulted in the creation of different tribes in the region. The Heart of the Monster is a rock formation that represents this legend, also located within the park.
Kooskia Crossing is an historical marker that reveals four descriptive panels about the significance of the area. These panels are about the Lewis and Clark expedition; the Nez Perce flight of 1877; the brave quest of the Nimiipuu, called a Warrior’s Journey; and a timeline along the Clearwater River, called A Rich Traditional Land Use. Headquartered in Kooskia, the Lochsa Ranger District covers nearly 400,000 acres and offers plenty of wildlife viewing and recreational opportunities, including hiking and fishing.
Along the Idaho/Montana border is the DeVoto Cedar Grove, where the ashes of conservationist and historian Bernard DeVoto (1897-1955) are spread. The area was significant to his editorial work on the Journals of Lewis and Clark, with cedars towering the landscape, up to 100 feet tall and 6 feet in diameter. Approaching the end of the byway is the Lolo Pass Visitor Center, an historical landmark where Lewis and Clark crossed over the pass in the Bitterroot Mountains.
Take the option to extend your trip from Lolo MT through Salmon, ID and into Boise. (585 mi 12H)

As motorcycle enthusiasts, we understand the thrill and joy of hitting the open road and feeling the wind in our hair. However, riding in wet weather requires a different set of skills and precautions to keep yourself and others safe.

In this article, we provide 10 essential tips to help you stay safe and prepared while riding in the rain, from checking your motorcycle before hitting the road to knowing when to pull over. Whether you're a new rider or an experienced one, these tips will give you expert advice and practical recommendations for a safe and enjoyable ride in the rain.

Before we dive into the tips, let's talk about why riding in the rain can be challenging and the importance of being prepared. Rain affects visibility, road conditions, and your motorcycle's performance, making it more difficult to control and navigate. It's essential to be proactive and take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety and avoid accidents.

So, without further ado, let's get started on our 10 tips for riding your motorcycle in the rain.

Tip 1: Check your motorcycle

Rain or shine, it's essential to check your motorcycle before hitting the road. However, checking your motorcycle is especially crucial when riding in the rain. Wet weather can make road conditions more treacherous and increase the likelihood of accidents. A well-maintained motorcycle can make all the difference in staying safe and avoiding accidents in wet weather.

To prepare your motorcycle for a rainy ride, start by ensuring that your tires have adequate tread depth and are inflated to the correct pressure. Check your brakes to make sure they are in good condition and that your brake pads are not worn down. It's also a good idea to check your lights, including your headlights, taillights, and turn signals, to ensure that they are working correctly.

In addition to these essential checks, consider using a rain cover for your air filter and chain to protect them from getting wet. Water can get into the air filter, causing it to clog and impairing engine performance. Wet chains can also cause rust and damage, so it's important to protect them from the rain.

Call to action: Always do a pre-ride inspection, especially in wet weather. Taking the time to check your motorcycle before hitting the road can help prevent accidents and ensure that your ride is safe and enjoyable.

Tip 2: Dress appropriately

When it comes to riding in the rain, wearing the right gear can make all the difference. Not only does proper rain gear keep you dry and comfortable, but it can also improve your visibility to other drivers on the road.

Explanation of how rain gear works - Rain gear is designed to be waterproof and windproof, keeping you dry and warm in wet weather. There are a variety of rain gear options available, from full rain suits to jackets and pants made specifically for wet weather riding. It's important to choose gear that is breathable and allows for ventilation to prevent sweating.

Importance of wearing proper gear - In addition to keeping you dry and comfortable, wearing proper gear can also protect you in case of an accident. Waterproof gear can prevent your clothes from getting wet and heavy, which can impede your movement and reaction time on the bike. Additionally, bright and reflective rain gear can make you more visible to other drivers on the road, reducing the risk of accidents.

Suggestions for the right clothing and accessories - When choosing rain gear, look for items that are made specifically for motorcycle riding and that offer features such as waterproof zippers, adjustable cuffs and hems, and reflective detailing. Consider purchasing a helmet with a built-in visor or anti-fog inserts to improve your visibility in wet conditions. Other useful accessories for wet weather riding include waterproof gloves, boot covers, and neck warmers.

Call to action: Invest in quality rain gear - Don't skimp on rain gear - investing in high-quality, properly fitting gear can make all the difference in your comfort and safety while riding in the rain. Be sure to check your gear before each ride to ensure that it's still in good condition and that zippers and seams are sealed. Remember, staying dry and visible is key to staying safe on the road.

Tip 3: Slow down

Riding at high speeds in wet weather can be dangerous and risky. Rain can significantly affect visibility and road conditions, making it hard to control your motorcycle. Therefore, it is essential to slow down and ride at a safe speed.

When it comes to braking and accelerating in the rain, it's crucial to be gentle and smooth. Abrupt or sudden movements can cause your tires to lose traction, leading to a loss of control or even a crash.

Here are a few tips for braking and accelerating in the rain:

Increase your following distance and give yourself plenty of time to stop.

Brake gently and smoothly, avoiding sudden or hard braking.

Be extra cautious when accelerating, especially when starting from a stop.

Avoid sudden movements and be gentle on the throttle.

Remember, it's always better to arrive at your destination safely, even if it takes a little longer. So, slow down and enjoy the ride while staying safe in wet weather.

Call to action: Always ride at a safe speed in the rain, and be extra gentle and smooth when braking and accelerating.

Tip 4: Avoid standing water

Riding through standing water can be one of the most dangerous challenges of riding in the rain. Water on the road can cause your tires to lose traction and potentially cause an accident. Here are some tips to help you navigate standing water safely:

Explanation of the dangers of hydroplaning Hydroplaning is a phenomenon where a layer of water forms between the tires of your motorcycle and the road, causing you to lose control of your bike. This can be extremely dangerous and is one of the biggest risks of riding through standing water.

Importance of avoiding standing water and puddles The best way to avoid hydroplaning is to avoid standing water and puddles altogether. If you see water on the road, slow down and try to navigate around it. Be especially cautious on roads with poor drainage or low spots where water may collect.

Tips for navigating wet roads If you can't avoid standing water, try to ride in the tire tracks of the vehicles in front of you. The tracks can be slightly drier and offer better traction. Additionally, try to ride in a straight line and avoid sudden movements, such as swerving or braking, which can cause you to lose control.

Call to action: Stay alert for standing water and adjust your route if necessary Always stay alert for standing water, especially in low-lying areas or near bodies of water. If you can, try to plan your route to avoid roads that are prone to flooding. Remember, the best way to stay safe in the rain is to be prepared and avoid unnecessary risks.

Tip 5: Maintain a safe distance

One of the most important things you can do when riding in the rain is to maintain a safe following distance. Wet roads can increase your stopping distance, so you need to leave more space between you and the vehicle in front of you. In general, you should aim to stay at least four seconds behind the vehicle in front of you.

To calculate your following distance, pick a fixed object on the road, like a sign or a tree. When the vehicle in front of you passes that object, start counting "one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three, one thousand four." If you pass the object before you finish counting, you're following too closely and need to increase your distance.

It's also important to remember that other vehicles may not be able to stop as quickly as you can in wet conditions. This means you should be extra cautious when changing lanes or passing other vehicles.

By maintaining a safe following distance, you'll give yourself more time to react to sudden changes in traffic and reduce the risk of a collision.

Call to action: Always leave enough space between yourself and other vehicles when riding in the rain. Remember to calculate your following distance by picking a fixed object on the road and counting "one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three, one thousand four."

Tip 6: Use proper lighting

Riding a motorcycle in the rain can greatly reduce your visibility on the road. This is why it's important to use proper lighting to make yourself more visible to other drivers. Your headlights, taillights, and turn signals are especially important in wet weather conditions.

Make sure that all of your lights are working properly before you hit the road. You should also clean your lights regularly to remove any dirt or debris that could impair their effectiveness. Consider installing high-visibility bulbs or reflective tape to make your motorcycle more visible.

When riding in the rain, always use your headlights, even during the day. This can help you see better, but it also makes you more visible to other drivers. Use your turn signals to indicate your intentions, and be sure to use your brake light to alert other drivers when you are slowing down or coming to a stop.

Remember, your lights are your lifeline when riding in the rain. Without them, you're practically invisible to other drivers. So always make sure they're in good working condition and use them properly.

Call to action: Take the time to check your motorcycle's lights and clean them regularly. Use high-visibility bulbs or reflective tape to make yourself more visible to other drivers. Always use your headlights, turn signals, and brake lights when riding in the rain.

Tip 7: Watch out for oil and debris

When it's raining, the water can wash oil and debris onto the road, making it even more slippery than it already is. This can be very dangerous for motorcycles, especially when taking turns or braking. Here are some tips to help you avoid oil and debris:

Stay alert for hazards: Be aware of your surroundings and scan the road ahead for any oil or debris that may be in your path.

Slow down: Reduce your speed when you see debris or oil on the road. Slow down gradually and try to avoid any sudden movements.

Avoid sudden braking: If you need to brake, apply the brakes gently and progressively. Avoid slamming on the brakes, as this can cause your wheels to lock up and skid.

Use your vision: Look ahead and try to spot any potential hazards. Use your peripheral vision to scan the sides of the road as well.

Use the center of the lane: When riding in wet weather, it's best to ride in the center of the lane to avoid any debris or oil that may be on the sides of the road.

Call to action: Stay alert and avoid hazards in the road by scanning the road ahead, reducing your speed, avoiding sudden braking, and using the center of the lane.

Tip 8: Be extra cautious at intersections

Intersections can be dangerous in any weather condition, but they can become even more treacherous when it's raining. In wet weather, the roads can become slick, reducing the amount of traction between the tires and the pavement. This can make it harder to stop, accelerate, and turn. Additionally, visibility can be reduced, making it harder to see other vehicles, pedestrians, and traffic signals. Here are some tips for navigating intersections safely in the rain:

Approach intersections with caution When you're approaching an intersection in the rain, it's important to slow down and be extra cautious. Give yourself plenty of time to react to changing traffic signals and other vehicles. Keep in mind that the roads may be slick, so you'll need to give yourself extra time to stop.

Be alert for other vehicles In wet weather, it can be harder to see other vehicles, so you'll need to be extra vigilant. Look for other cars, trucks, and motorcycles, and be prepared for unexpected movements. Always be ready to stop or maneuver around other vehicles if necessary.

Watch for pedestrians Pedestrians can be harder to see in the rain, so you'll need to be extra cautious when you're approaching crosswalks or other areas where pedestrians might be crossing the road. Look for people carrying umbrellas or wearing raincoats, and be prepared to stop if necessary.

Check traffic signals Traffic signals can be harder to see in the rain, so be sure to check them carefully as you approach intersections. If you're not sure what the signal is indicating, come to a complete stop and wait until you're sure it's safe to proceed.

By approaching intersections with caution, being alert for other vehicles and pedestrians, and checking traffic signals carefully, you can navigate intersections safely in wet weather. Remember to give yourself plenty of time to react, and be prepared to adjust your speed or route if conditions become too hazardous.

Tip 9: Stay focused and alert

Riding a motorcycle in the rain requires extra focus and attention. Wet conditions can reduce your visibility and make it harder to control your bike, so it's important to stay alert and avoid distractions. Here are some tips to help you stay focused while riding in the rain:

Avoid distractions: Distractions can be dangerous at any time, but they're especially risky in wet weather. Avoid using your phone or other devices while riding and stay focused on the road ahead.

Keep your eyes moving: Make a habit of scanning the road ahead and checking your mirrors frequently. This will help you stay aware of your surroundings and avoid potential hazards.

Anticipate other drivers: In wet weather, it's important to anticipate what other drivers might do. Be prepared for sudden stops or turns and give yourself plenty of space to react.

Be mindful of fatigue: Riding in the rain can be tiring, so it's important to take breaks when you need them. Stop and rest if you're feeling fatigued, and avoid riding for long periods without taking a break.

Remember, staying focused and alert is key to staying safe on the road, especially in wet weather. By avoiding distractions, keeping your eyes moving, anticipating other drivers, and taking breaks when needed, you'll be better able to handle the challenges of riding in the rain.

Tip 10: Know when to pull over

While riding in the rain, there may come a point when the conditions become too dangerous to continue. It's important to know when it's time to pull over and wait out the storm. Here are some tips to help you recognize when it's time to pull over:

Heavy rainfall: If the rain is coming down so hard that you can't see the road, it's time to pull over. Heavy rain can make it difficult to see hazards and other vehicles on the road.

Flooding: If the road is flooding or there is standing water, it's best to pull over. Not only can standing water cause hydroplaning, but it can also hide hazards in the road.

Thunderstorms: If there is lightning, it's best to pull over and wait until the storm passes. Riding in a thunderstorm can be extremely dangerous, especially if lightning strikes near you.

Poor visibility: If the rain is making it difficult to see, it's time to pull over. Poor visibility can make it hard to see hazards and other vehicles on the road.

When pulling over, make sure to find a safe place off the road. Look for a rest area, gas station, or other sheltered location. Once you've pulled over, wait until the rain subsides before continuing your ride.

Call to action: Know when it's time to pull over and wait out the rain. Always prioritize your safety over getting to your destination quickly.

Conclusion

Riding a motorcycle in the rain can be a challenging experience, but with the right preparation and safety measures, it can also be an enjoyable one. By following the 10 essential tips we've outlined in this article, you can stay safe and prepared while riding in wet weather.
